This year we had the release of the second set of Topps UTZ Baseball cards. UTZ is a regional maker of snack foods mainly potato chips. They are based in Hanover, PA. They are available in the North-Eastern part of the United States and also along parts of the east coast. They can be found in grocery stores including Walmart. UTZ is the official chip of MLB.
Details of the set:
100 cards in the set
4 cards (really 3 cards plus a coupon ‘card’) in each pack.
Available in 12 & 24 bag packages (I haven’t actually seen the 24 bag ones in stores or online)
Released in March 2020 and as of the date of this post, the are still available.
The cards have a design that is different from the 2020 Topps flagship set. There is a striped border on the sides and the team name is displayed largely on the bottom above the player’s name. In 2019 you could identify these cards easily because the UTZ logo was on the front of the cards. That is absent this year. The backs are similar to the regular Topps set except for the UTZ name that appears above the card numbers. Of course, the numbers are also different from the regular Topps set. The colors on the back are also a bit different. The coupon gives you $1 off a pack or regular 2020 Topps Series 1, 2, or update.
The Hitless Set
There are only base cards in this set so don’t expect any short prints, autographs, or relics.
There are plenty of top stars and also fifteen rookie cards.
If you can’t find the cards in your area then you can buy them on www.utzsnacks.com
I checked the site and it appears that they only have a 6 package bundle of the 12 bag snack pack. They cost about $30. The 12 bag snack pack is also available on Amazon but costs 2-3 times the grocery store price albeit with free shipping. This may or may not include the cards depending on your purchase date. My local grocery store had this item for $4.99. Walmart seems to have the best price at about $4.00. The Utz site clearly identifies them as having the Topps cards inside but be careful buying on walmart.com because they do not.
